Family sponsorship
Spouse sponsorship guide for Canadian immigration
Conditions and steps to sponsor a spouse for Canadian permanent residence, and the difference between inland and outland sponsorship.

Spouse sponsorship is one of Canada’s main family reunification pathways. A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner.
Sponsor requirements
- Be 18 or older.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian under the Indian Act.
- Not be receiving social assistance (except for disability reasons).
- Be able to meet the basic needs of the sponsored person and any dependents.
Two main streams
- Inland sponsorship — the sponsored partner is legally in Canada; an open work permit is often available during processing.
- Outland sponsorship — filed from abroad; the file is sent to the federal office in charge.
After filing
- Requested documents, medical exam, and security checks.
- Interview possible in some cases.
- Upon approval, the spouse receives permanent residence.
Fees and processing times change. Check canada.ca before filing.
