Study permit in Canada: the key steps to get one
The core requirements and step order to apply for a Canadian study permit, from DLI acceptance to arrival.

To study in Canada for more than six months, you generally need a study permit. The decision follows a clear sequence.
Main steps
- Get an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- Prove financial capacity for tuition and living expenses.
- Prepare a valid passport, official photos, the acceptance letter, and any medical or security documents requested.
- Submit the application online through an IRCC account, pay the fees, and complete biometrics if required.
- Upon approval, obtain a Letter of Introduction, which you present on arrival.
Practical tips
- Start preparing 4 to 6 months before the session begins.
- Quebec additionally requires a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) before you apply for the permit.
