Express Entry
CRS guide: how to improve your Express Entry score
How the Comprehensive Ranking System is structured and the legal strategies to maximise your CRS score before a draw.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) determines your rank in the Express Entry pool. Your score is not fixed: several factors are under your control.
Score structure
- Core candidate factors (age, education, experience, first language) — the largest share.
- Spouse factors when applicable.
- Skill transferability (education × language × experience).
- Additional factors (provincial nomination, job offer, Canadian credential, French…).
What quickly boosts your score
- Improve your language level by retaking IELTS/CELPIP or TEF/TCF — moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 can add tens of points.
- Add French when English is your first language (or vice versa) — direct bonus.
- Provincial nomination (PNP) — adds 600 points and usually decides the outcome.
- Canadian work experience after one year of legal work in Canada.
- Eligible job offer from a Canadian employer.
What to avoid
- Relying only on more years of experience (score ceiling is quickly reached).
- Forgetting to retake a language test every two years.
- Submitting an incomplete file after an ITA (only 60 days).
