Language tests to immigrate to Canada: the foundation of your Express Entry profile

Proving your language level is one of the most important parts of your Express Entry profile. Canada’s two official languages are English and French, and you must demonstrate your level through a recognized test from an organization accepted by IRCC.

Why does language matter so much?

• Many points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) depend on your result.
• Mastering a second language (for example French in addition to English) can earn extra points.
• Some programs require a minimum level before an application is accepted.

Generally accepted tests

• For English: recognized tests such as IELTS (General version) and CELPIP.
• For French: recognized tests such as TEF Canada and TCF Canada.

Preparation tips

• Plan early: test dates can be limited in some cities.
• Practise the real format (listening, reading, writing, speaking).
• Keep your results report; you’ll need its number and date when creating your profile.
