New 2026 Express Entry categories: are you eligible?

In 2026, IRCC reworked the list of occupation-based categories in Express Entry. These categories let you be invited to apply for permanent residence with a CRS score that is often much lower than general draws — provided you work in the right occupation. Here is what changed.

The new 2026 categories

Three major additions for 2026:

• Researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience.
• Transport occupations: pilots, aircraft mechanics and inspectors, among others.
• Highly skilled military applicants recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces.

The categories that continue

IRCC keeps inviting candidates in:

• French-language proficiency — a huge lever (the July 2026 French round was at 420).
• Health care and social services.
• Skilled trades.

What was removed

Only the agriculture and agri-food category was retired for 2026.

The key change: 12 months of experience

For all renewed categories, the minimum experience required rises from 6 months to 1 year in an eligible occupation, gained in Canada or abroad over the previous three years. This is the first thing to check before betting on a category.

How to tell if you qualify

Check the occupation code (NOC) of your job against the official list for each category on canada.ca. Being in a category does not guarantee an invitation, but it sharply lowers the score you need.
